Driving tips

Queensland driving tips to keep you safe out there.

Practical advice from our accredited instructors to help you pass your test and drive safely for life.

Test day

Pass your driving test first time

Passing first time is not luck — it comes from consistent practice and booking at the right time. Book your test when your instructor says you are ready, not just when a date is free.

  • Practise on a variety of roads, not just the test route
  • Get a mock test in the week before
  • Sleep well and arrive early on the day
  • Use a car you already know — like ours
Road safety

Road safety starts with looking early

Most crashes start with something the driver saw too late. Train your eyes to look well ahead so you have time to react calmly.

  • Scan 12–15 seconds ahead
  • Keep at least a 3-second gap — double it in the wet
  • Check mirrors every 5–8 seconds
  • Cover the brake near schools, crossings and driveways
Refresher

Why a refresher lesson is worth it

Had a break from driving, moved to Queensland or hold an overseas licence? Habits drift quickly. One or two lessons rebuild safe habits and confidence fast.

  • Update your knowledge of QLD road rules
  • Get comfortable on highways and roundabouts
  • Practise parking and reversing with feedback
Know the risks

The most common causes of crashes

Driving is a privilege — take it seriously and most of the risk disappears. These are the big four to avoid every time you drive.

  • Speeding — slow down, especially in the wet
  • Distraction — phone away, eyes on the road
  • Fatigue — take a break every two hours
  • Following too close — leave a safe gap
